Project: by carte blanche Role: Consultant

Carte Blanche, the Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance, hired FuturePerfect to assess the viability of touring one its most ambitious works titled by carte blanche throughout North America. We crafted specifically tailored media about the work and reached out to a strategic selection of presenters from our network. We followed this up with a series of face-to-face meetings introducing Carte Blanche’s then artistic director Hooman Shariffi to key artistic directors.

by carte blanche is a one-hour dance piece that boldly foregrounds the compositional process as a lens for re-thinking matters of governance, control and power at a time when political uncertainty once again seems to have grown heavier and more pervasive. By intentionally removing the central organizing choreographer/leader, Carte Blanche advances the practice of decentralized artistic process with links to such known American figures as Cunningham, Cage, Judson Church, Paxton and others. Through both improvisation and risk, the dancers arrive at an artistic creation that is forged by” diverging ideas, opinions, wills and stories that form a body, a complex and multi-faceted being, with concrete movements and activities.”

On each night of the performance, meeting just hours before curtain, the 13-member company invite a special musical guest to collaborate with them. In a very short period of time, dancers and musicians must engage in a process of negotiation and acceptance to arrive at a performative agreement. Thus, without the traditional hierarchy in place, the pathways of possibility and unpredictability multiply, giving way to unique stage moments that are both difficult and breathtaking.
